When Putin launched his all-out invasion of Ukraine in February, the Black Sea fleet was at the centre of the action. The Crimea-based fleet was tasked with launching Kalibr cruise missiles at military and civilian targets deep inside Ukrainian territory. The fleet was also supposed to block access to Ukraine’s ports, and threaten an amphibious landing on Odesa. However, six months into the war, the once-feared force has turned into a largely defensive force.

As Russian forces try to destroy US-supplied HIMARS in Ukraine, Kyiv has come up with a unique strategy to trick Putin’s forces. According to a report in Washington Post, Ukraine has deployed a fleet of decoys resembling the HIMARS. These decoys, draw the attention of the Russian army away from the 16 HIMARS currently on the frontlines in Ukraine. The decoys drew at least 10 Kalibr cruise missiles and tricked Putin’s forces into wasting expensive cruise missiles on dummy targets.
